On a mountain, wild and eery
stood a brave young volunteer
By his side, his darling Mary
fondly ties his bandoleer
On his shoulder, she lay crying
Oh my love, please don't go
for I know that men are dying
in the Glen of Aherlo
I must go though I am hounded
from the home and the friends I know
for my comrades are surrounded
in the Glen of Aherlo
As he marched away to glory
to return she knew not when,
loud sounds told the story
of the fighting in the glen
And the sound of rifles firing
set her free young heart to fear
Mary breath-ed a prayer to heaven
for her brave young volunteer
I must go tho I am hounded
from the home and the friends I know
for my comrades are surrounded
in the Glen of Aherlo
On a mountain wild and eery
in the land he loved the best
his young comrades and his Mary
simply laid him down to rest
There a lonely watch was keeping
while her young heart cried its fill
For altho he lies a-sleeping,
far away she hears him still
I must go though I am hounded
from the home and the friends I know
for my comrades are surrounded
in the Glen of Aherlo
I must go though I am hounded
from the home and the friends I know
for my comrades are surrounded
in the Glen of Aherlo
